In the battle of the elder stalwarts Les Wright and Anne Rowe emerged winners of the coveted Fred Sedon Memorial Trophy at the Wanganui Tennis Club yesterday.
The annual event is for club players over the age of 70 and has been organised by Wright since its inception in 2003 in memory of popular court regular Fred Sedon who passed away several years earlier.
Wright (75) won the trophy for the first time after he and Rowe (77) dispatched last year's winner Bill McIntosh (73) and his partner Nola Fraser (75) 6-1 in what was effectively the final.
The event is a round robin contest and after three matches each yesterday morning both the Wright/Rowe and Fraser/McIntosh combinations remained unbeaten.
"We had 12 players compete today - six men and six women. The women draw partners in the morning of the competition and Anne and I managed to win,' Wright said. "I have organised the event since its inception and have never had my name on the trophy, so this is a first and it's extremely pleasing.
