A man alleged to have made a hoax call to police that sparked an armed offenders squad callout to a Wanganui school on Thursday has appeared in court.

Bevan Lee Stoneman, 48, was yesterday charged with creating criminal nuisance by making a fictitious phone call to 111 to report "an angry man with a gun" walking around Churton Primary School in Aramoho.

He also faced a charge of failing to supply his fingerprints and photographs to police.

He was represented in the Whanganui District Court yesterday by Anna Brosnahan as the duty solicitor.

Somme Parade was cordoned off from Quick Ave and the school was placed on lockdown after a 111 phone call on Thursday.

Justice of the Peace Jan Bullan referred to the "enormous distress" experienced by children involved in the incident.

She remanded Stoneman in custody until Tuesday.
