Turakina Girls' College students got to spend time with two inspirational women yesterday when they were visited by former Capital Shakers and Central Pulse player Ngarama Milner-Olsen and recording artist and TV presenter Ria Hall.

As a former student of Turakina, Ngarama Milner-Olsen, who now competes in triathlons, told the students she gained her ability to maintain balance in her life while she was a student at the Marton school.

"I grew up and developed character at this school, when I attended from 1996 until 1999.

"It was the most enjoyable, challenging and emotional time, where I developed strong bonds and leadership skills."

Mrs Milner-Olsen said the teachers at Turakina provided guidance while students learned to lead themselves, which gave her the confidence to start her own personal training business at just 20.

Ria Hall, sang at the opening of the Rugby World Cup 2011 and released her self-titled debut EP in 2011, which won Best Maori Album at the New Zealand Music Awards 2012.

Ms Hall ran a workshop with the students and said she was excited to spend time with them.

"I've got a few friends and cousins who are old girls, so I'm looking forward to this - I love these kinds of kaupapa," she said.
