Bev Way has seen a few generations of cadets pass through St John and has enjoyed sharing her wealth of knowledge with them.

The Wanganui woman has been involved with the organisation for 32 years and is the manager of the Wanganui youth division. A former nurse, Ms Way became involved with St John helping to teach nursing skills to its youth members.

"I became quite passionate about the organisation and could see the benefit of working with these young people, teaching them general life skills, health care, first aid and self discipline," she said.

During her time with St John she has picked up her primary care 1 and first responder qualifications and has devoted many an hour to several community and sporting events around the town, being there to care for those who need it.

Ms Way said she had worked with many St John youth members who had later moved into the medical profession and enjoyed seeing them grow.

"I believe it's important to help one another and I get so much pride to see them develop," she said.

And if that wasn't enough, Ms Way had also assisted with fundraising events for the charity.

Ms Way has been nominated for the Pride of New Zealand Awards in the lifetime achievement category.

Her nomination pointed to her "lovely genteel manner which the youngsters respect and they respond in kind".
