Over the years it has grown into a national drawcard and its reputation has spread internationally. Last year the International Boot Throwing Association was formed and New Zealand became the only member in the Southern Hemisphere which makes Taihape a player on the international scene of boot throwing.
New Zealand joins Estonia, Russia, Sweden, Italy, Finland, Germany, Poland, Belgium and France.
The foundation of the New Zealand association was created by Taihape Community Development Trust and the Rotary Club of Taihape.
A small group of staunch supporters have worked on a constitution which includes a clause naming Taihape as the official headquarters of the New Zealand association.
And next up is organising regional boot throwing competitions leading to naming national champions to compete at international level.
The inaugural New Zealand Rural Games will be held in Queenstown on the weekend of February 7 and 8, next year at the Queenstown Rugby and Recreation Centre.
The Taihape Development Community Trust manager Elizabeth Mortland said Taihape has been asked to be part of it.
"We would very much like a South Island regional championship at the Rural Games which would go into the NZ Championships on Gumboot Day in Taihape in March, 2015."
Ms Mortland said if they can find sponsorship the New Zealand champions could also attend the world boot throwing competitions next year.
