Singer songwriter Dan Bolton is one of those special artists whose original compositions surpass the standard tunes on which so many jazz singers rely. That is because for every one of Dan's songs there is a story behind it.
Drawing on his life experiences, he delights in engaging his audiences so they feel as much a part of his songs as he does. His music is reminiscent of George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin but with a modern twist, incorporating elements of jazz, pop and Latin American styles.
Dan left his native Australia five years ago and went to New York because he wanted to be where a lot of the music he likes originated from. He also wanted to be around the best musicians in the world. He spent four years in New York City where he carved out a niche with his own act and as a musical director for both Hollywood and Broadway. He has returned home to be closer to family. It's important to him, as much as his music.
Joining Dan on this New Zealand tour is Kiwi drummer Mark Lockett who also lived in NYC and worked there with Dan. Johnny Lawrence on bass rounds out the rhythm section. Oscar Laven, virtuoso saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist completes what is an irresistible quartet.
When asked about his future plans, now that he is back home, Dan says, "I just want to keep getting better at what I do, to keep writing great songs and improve as a musician and singer. I hope my songs get to be appreciated by as many people as possible. It's like a legacy I'd like to leave for other people to enjoy."
