A 22-year-old man has been charged with presenting a firearm at police and further charges may be laid after an incident at Vinegar Hill campground near Hunterville.
Police were called to the campground on Tuesday, December 19, where a man was threatening his partner and other occupants of the campground with a firearm.
When police arrived, the man presented the firearm at them and was shot by police. He received non-life threatening injuries and is in a stable condition in Palmerston North Hospital. No one else was injured.
Detective Inspector Marc Hercock said police inquiries are continuing and further charges may be laid.
The man is due to appear in the Palmerston North District Court on January 25. He will remain in police custody until his appearance.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) is investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
