In a case of women helping women, the Zonta club of Wanganui has received a national gong for its work in helping young Wanganui girls.
For the past two years Wanganui members have run a fashion parade at the Wanganui racecourse to raise money and awareness for Shine Girl Whanganui.
Shine Girl provides self development courses to intermediate aged girls in Wanganui. Shine Girl's Heidi Barnett said the funding raised by Zonta was crucial. "It means we can be there at the schools taking the courses. We want to teach these girls while they are open to listening and learning."
Zonta club of Wanganui's Philippa Nixon said it was exciting to win the Cherry Raymond Award which was announced at the New Zealand Zonta conference in Rotorua at the weekend.
Zonta is a global women's group which run projects with a community focus to support women and advocate for them.
