A beanie was found on Saturday - day seven of a search for two young men missing in bush adjoining the SH1 Desert Rd.

There were 101 people out searching that day, with some from as far away as Auckland and Wellington. The searchers included police, Land Search and Rescue, and many were volunteers.

Their search was expected to continue yesterday. The two men, in their early 20s, are alleged to have parked a stolen car on a track off Tree Trunk Gorge Rd and run off into the bush on August 12. They called 111 and asked for help the following day.

A search started that day, and has involved a helicopter and members of their families.

Other items of clothing and the remains of a fire have been found.

The Police National Dive Squad has searched Mangatawai Stream, which starts on the slopes of Mount Tongariro and runs down to the Tongariro River.

Based on Saturday's search, Inspector Tony Jeurissen says further plans are being put in place.

"Unfortunately, the two men have still not been found but searchers remain determined to find them."

Small developments like finding the beanie have kept the searchers going.

"With the continued dedication from all the volunteers, we will bring these men home to their whānau," Inspector Jeurissen said.

He was grateful for the enthusiasm shown by many people all week, and for the ongoing support from Ngāti Tūwharetoa.
