Decision on proposal to upgrade campus to category 1 imminent
The heritage status of Wanganui Collegiate will come under the spotlight next week.
Heritage New Zealand (HNZ) will discuss a proposal to grant category 1 heritage status to the entire campus at its board meeting next Thursday.
The school has had six individual buildings at category 2 on the heritage list since 1982, including Grey, Hadfield and Marris houses, the chapel, the cricket pavilion and the toilet quarters. The current proposal would combine all of those into a single category 1 historic place list entry from the complex as a whole.
"This will not only recognise the outstanding heritage significance of the school complex through the upgraded category 1 status, but also include important school buildings that weren't previously listed," Heritage advisor Blyss Wagstaff said.
