Thousands of by-the-wind sailors or Velella velella jellyfish have arrived on Castlecliff beach. The jellyfish drift on the ocean surface at the mercy of wind and tides, and are usually cast up by storm events.
They use an air-filled float to sail the surface of the ocean. By-the-wind sailors can sting, but not as seriously as the trailing tentacles of bluebottle jellyfish.
