Hurling himself through the air at the Wanganui Boys' and Girls' Gym Club is where Ricky Bing wants to be. But five months ago it seemed a long way off. He was wheelchair-bound having undergone nearly two years of cancer treatment.
For Ricky, this year's Masters Games was a chance to get back into competitive gymnastics.
The 26-year-old, who now lives in Auckland, grew up in Wanganui and spent most of his time at the gym.
"This is my home club, I did gym here for 20 years," he said.
He worked his way into the New Zealand team in his late teens, before injury and university got in the way. But Ricky was about to face an even bigger setback. The fit, athletic twenty-something was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer. It was a one-and-a-half-year battle he appears to have won. Ricky finished treatment five months ago and the cancer is now in remission.
