Lower temperatures and heavy dew in Wanganui mean the total fire ban can be lifted, despite not having much rain in the city.
The fire ban was lifted at midnight and the district was put on to a restricted fire season, fire service area commander Bernie Rush said.
Mr Rush told the Chronicle last week that Wanganui would need "about another 100ml of rain" before the fire ban could be lifted. While there has been no rain in the city since then, areas further inland have had rain "in excess of 100ml".
As well as inland areas getting more rain, the lower temperatures and heavy dew in the city have prompted "a lot of new growth".
"We can control things better down this end of the patch," Mr Rush said.
