The second offending happened while Turu was on bail for the first.
Judge Dugald Matheson said Turu and the victim were dining together on December 31 and were both drinking alcohol.
About 2am he began punching the victim again in the head before grabbing her by the hair and pulling her off the bed.
The victim landed on the floor and Turu punched her repeatedly, giving her contusions to either side of her face.
She had to be taken to hospital.
"That's sad reading," said Judge Matheson.
"I've read it out so you can be reminded why you are here and so those that are here supporting you can be reminded why you're here."
The victim and Turu's father were in court supporting him.
Turu had 10 previous convictions resulting in prison terms and 12 previous offences committed while on bail.
His history included possession of offensive weapons, wilful damage and assaults.
"It's frightening to me to sit here and hear time and time again the story of people who profess to love other people then turn on them with violence," said Judge Matheson.
Defence lawyer Jamie Waugh said Turu had been "in and out of prison most of his life".
"When he drinks alcohol, past demons come back," Mr Waugh said.
Judge Matheson sentenced Turu to 14 months in prison on the charge of injuring with intent, and added four months for the male assaults female charge.
He was ordered to undergo any psychological assessment and domestic violence programmes as directed by the probation officer.
"Learn to be in a loving family," said Judge Matheson.
