A plan to drop the speed limit near Westmere School to 70km/h has been temporarily shelved.
Whanganui District Council's infrastructure committee last month endorsed dropping the speed from the current 100km/h limit around the intersection of Rapanui Rd and Francis Rd following a plea from nearby resident Rachel Stewart to do something about the "endless parade of boy racers" in the area.
The speed reduction was a measure council staff thought would not do much and which Stewart thought was not enough but it was recommended by the committee.
On Tuesday, council decided to ask for a further report on reducing the speed limit to be brought back and re-debated at council's October meeting.
Stewart wants a change to the intersection layout to reduce the space for boy racer behaviour but the council says the intersection is a designated an "over-dimension" truck route, which meant there needed to be a wide turning space.
