Marton’s main public pool is closed this summer but there is still a swimming option - and it is free.
Rangitīkei College’s pool is set to open from 10am until 5pm every day - except public holidays - from January 3 until students return to school.
The closing date is yet to be confirmed.
In a statement, the Marton Swim Centre said opening hours at the college pool were subject to weather conditions.
“It is approx 1 metre [deep] at the shallow end so little ones would need to be accompanied by a caregiver 16 years and older.
“We do expect it might get busy so we may need to limit the number of people in the pool to help keep the pool clean.”
Last September, Rangitīkei district councillors voted to close the Marton Swim Centre facility for the 2024/25 summer season after structural damage to a beam caused a partial roof collapse.
At the time, Rangitīkei Mayor Andy Watson said the decision was made to take a future-focused view of the facility, with user safety the priority.
“We have the chance to ensure this facility will serve our community for the long term, and council have decided to take that opportunity now.”
A report from the council’s chief operating officer, Arno Benadie, on December 19 said the council had engaged experts to complete a full asset condition assessment of the entire Marton pool facility.
That included all buildings, the pool, the pool pipework and all associated filter and heating equipment.
“Structural engineers are well advanced on most of the technical reviews to be undertaken and drafts of most elements of reports are nearing completion,” the report said.
“These will be complete in the next week with the exception of electrical investigations which awaits further inputs from the site.”
Benadie’s report said a full report would be presented to the council by the end of February.
Hunterville’s outdoor public pool, 26.5km from Marton, will be open from January 3 from noon to 5pm.
Admission is $1 per person.
