I arrived during an activity that involved turning old egg cartons into flowers and before I knew it I was elbow deep in glue and paint, and loving it!
I had been invited to visit the Whanau Positive Futures programme of study at Te Heti Marae in Castlecliff, by tutor Mary Joblin. Local training provider Training For You is working with Te Heti Marae to deliver a free programme leading to a NCEA level 2 qualification.
The students attend three mornings a week for 20 weeks, and if they have children they can attend the kohanga next door. Alisha, a young mum from Wanganui East, said that she can't believe her luck. Not only is she is studying towards a good qualification, but her two children get to spend time at the kohanga, which they love. Her children are picked up in the morning and are dropped off at 4pm. The programme finishes at 12 noon which means Alisha gets three afternoons a week to herself to do her course work (and housework). Bliss!
This NCEA qualification has a focus on a Social and Community Services Vocational Pathway. This means that the students will gain skills and knowledge that are relevant to pursue employment or further study in the areas like childcare, healthcare and other community work.
Enrolments are welcome at any time.
