The closure of Portal Street advised earlier this afternoon will now not proceed.
The Wanganui District Council was going to close one of Wanganui's major urban routes from 7pm tonight because of land stability issues.
However containers will now be put in place this evening to stop material slipping onto the road between Anzac Parade and Forres Street on Durie Hill. In the meantime, traffic controls will remain in place to manage traffic.
The walkway up the hill from Anzac Parade will remain open.
It's believed the problem is a hillside slip which developed in front of a house in Rees St, which is directly above Portal St. The slip is one of the hundreds that occurred in the wake of the June 20-21 weather bomb which hit the region.
