Better watch your step if you are out on the town this weekend.
People drinking alcohol in a banned area, lending identification to someone under 18 or giving a fake ID will face $250 instant fines under new legislation.
New rules have applied since December 18, under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act.
Police can now issue alcohol infringement offence notices (AIONs) for a range of new offences, including breach of local alcohol bans (formerly called liquor bans), lending ID to an under-18 year-old, and presenting a fake ID. Each of those offences brings a $250 fine.
Police Central District deployment manager, Inspector Ross Grantham, suggests people avoid potential infringements by leaving their drinks at home.
