Chronicle reporter John Maslin was used to a bit of rough and tumble, growing up in the central Taranaki town of Eltham, but he reckons it's taken on a Wild West feel with this unique roadside display.
The coffins are made by Kevin Moyle, who is a carpenter by trade but supplements his income by building pet hutches and furniture as well as made-to-measure coffins.
Mr Moyle reckons the coffin can be put to other uses before its final journey too. By taking the lid off, the owner could put some shelves in place to store CDs or use it as a coffee table.
