A 20-year-old Whanganui man who pumped more than $70 of petrol into a missing vehicle and then took off without paying has been let off without punishment.
Freedom Namana pleaded guilty to theft when he appeared in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Graham Hoskin said at about 8.05am on Saturday, January 27, Namana drove into Z service station on London St with a co-offender.
"He pumped $76.41 into the missing vehicle ... got into the driver's seat and drove away without paying."
The explanation Namana gave police, when he was arrested not long after, was that he didn't know why he did it.
