The Conservative Party is looking for a candidate to run for the Whanganui electorate.

Electorate chairman Jack Ager said the local branch had its first meeting on June 14, and were now "going through the process of electing a candidate for Wanganui".

"We've knocked out a couple already," said Mr Ager, adding they were "still on the lookout" for the right candidate.

He said he'd "had contact" with party leader Colin Craig a few times.

"He's such a great guy," Mr Ager said. "It's the really good policies that he's got. We're pushing the policies more than anything."

Economics and family values were high priority, he said.

Mr Ager said a candidate would "hopefully" be found within a month.

"We're only just very new on the ground."

Mr Ager encouraged voters to go to the Conservative Party website and "just look up what he's about, what the party does, and make up their own mind".
