A man is in a serious condition after a paragliding accident at a remote beach north of Hāwera.
About 3.10pm on Sunday the man crashed 1km south of Kaupokonui Heads Rd, near the Kaupokonui Stream in South Taranaki.
A police spokeswoman said the man suffered a serious back injury but was responsive.
A St John Ambulance spokesperson said where the paraglider crashed was inaccessible by road and Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter pulled him out using a winch.
The Hawera Fire Brigade was called to the scene, and police and ambulance staff arrived at the remote beach from New Plymouth and Whanganui.
