Nga Taonga Takaro is encouraging young people to participate in physical activity (hakinakina) using a kaupapa Māori approach.
Whanganui District Health Board and Healthy Families Whanganui Ruapehu Rangitikei — in collaboration with Te Kura o Kokohuia — have supported this kaupapa by co-ordinating Ngā Taonga Takaro wānanga within Whanganui and Taihape.
These wānanga were facilitated by Rangatahi Tuu Rangatira and more than 100 participants from throughout Whanganui, Rangitīkei and Ruapehu attended, representing different sectors of the community.
A highlight of Ngā Taonga Takaro is the Awa Sports Day held in March and hosted this year by Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Atihaunui a Paparangi.
