Open Day at Whanganui's Bell Street Police Station on Sunday

The Bell St police station is opening its doors to the public from 10am to 2pm on Sunday, with displays and tours of the station plus recruitment information for people interested in joining the force.

Senior Constable Tanya Ross said static displays will be set up in the station's back carpark.

"People will be able to see members of the armed offenders squad and their firearms and uniforms and look at a DVD of the work they do," Ms Ross said.

"We'll have a search and rescue display, police dog and handler and Wanganui Community Patrol display. The traffic section will have a police car for people to get in and we'll also have a prison truck for people to look inside."

Victim Support and Neighbourhood Support will also have displays.

"The police station will be open and we'll have six or seven police officers who will show people around," Ms Ross said.

"You can expect to see the cells and the muster room, where our frontline officers work, and the Tasers and radios. You'll go to the CIB floor where our detectives work and see forensic photos taken over the years. There'll be a question and answer session at the finish."

A sausage sizzle will run throughout the day, with sausages available for a gold coin. Proceeds will go to Wanganui Community Patrol.

Children can also pick up or drop off forms for a colouring competition for under-5s, 6 to 9-year-olds and 10 to 13-year-olds. Entry forms have already been distributed to primary and intermediate schools and are available at police station front counters.

Entries close on March 18, with the winners receiving a police dog puppy toy.
