"The more sand has escaped from the hourglass of our life, the clearer we should see through it." — Niccolo Machiavelli

Winter is here. What better way to spend winter than reading in front of a fire, maybe sipping a mug of honey mead — that ancient marriage of fermented honey and water surrounded by myth and legend, consumed by Greek Gods and heroic Vikings and the Dwarves of Middle Earth, quenched the people of Westeros in the Game of Thrones and before the battle of Hogwarts, including a pint for Harry Potter before he vanquished Voldemort. Traced back to 7000BC and at one time said to have outstripped sales of craft beer in the US. Mmmm.

My Angels remind me to get back to the column. Niccolo Machiavelli, an Italian diplomat, politician, historian, philosopher, humanist and writer, sometimes called the father of modern politics, is noted as the author of the leading quote. What might he mean by it? To me it simply it means us oldies rule! I have come to realise that as I have gone through my life and aged, I have done things and made mistakes. I have also gained experience and hopefully learned from those experiences. By learning from my mistakes I have the opportunity to come up with better processes and choices to avoid that mistake again. This increases my ability to move forward in my life. Sometimes these lessons in life are small ones and sometimes they are fully life changing ones. We always have the opportunity to give up or learn from the experience. Sometimes I get an inspiration that will help me to overcome something in my life, but still can't manage to move forward. That is the time to find someone who sees this clearer than I do, and learn from them. It is good to seek counsel from those who have more experience, they will give something of value.

When enough sand has escaped from our hourglass of life we become the person with hard-won knowledge and others gather around us are the seekers.
Sages or seekers our hourglass is emptying, enabling us to see clearer the time we have to live this commendable life.
