McGruers drapery in Marton is a survivor against the changing times of the retail industry, and in three weeks the store celebrates 100 years in business.
The shop opened on April 3, 1917, after J D McGruer took over A H Sutcliffe, a chain of drapery and men's stores.
Mr McGruer was married with three daughters, but none of his children wanted to take over the business so when he died in 1966 it was sold to the Scott family.
In its heyday, McGruers had 19 stores across New Zealand - including one in Whanganui.
Today the Marton drapery is the only one left, and Peter and Carol Scott are the third generation owners.
"The two world wars, the great depression and the Muldoon era ... McGruers has pushed through it all," Mr Scott said.
