A formal opening is being planned for a Rangitikei bridge - 110 years after it was built.
The Mangaweka Bridge off State Highway 1 just outside Mangaweka, dates back to 1904.
Paul Eames of Heritage Mangaweka said the bridge, which spans a picturesque bend in the Rangitikei River, was supposed to be opened in September 1904 by the then premier, Richard Seddon.
"But there had been some unusual weather that week and the party from Wellington couldn't get through."
Extensive research by Heritage Mangaweka found no record of a formal opening.
