Ruapehu crash probed
Council road safety engineers, crash investigators and WorkSafe NZ worked through their investigations yesterday as Ruapehu district came to terms with Saturday's bus crash that killed a young Auckland girl. Mayor Don Cameron said: "Our thoughts remain with the grieving family of the young girl who died, our rescue teams and those recovering from the tragic incident - an immeasurable loss for the family and a heavy impact on our small Ruapehu communities."
Towels cause fire
Whanganui firefighters were called to a house in Kepa St, Whanganui East, about 1pm yesterday. Station Officer Jason Hamlin said a child had placed towels on a fire box and they caught alight. There was no damage to the house.
Farming for profit
Beef + Lamb NZ is holding a seminar on farming for profit at the Fordell Hall on August 9. There will be information on forestry and carbon, drench resistance, the Horizons Regional Council's Sustainable Land Use Initiative and farm environment strategies. The seminar runs from 12.30 to 5pm, with refreshments afterward.
Document charges
A woman has pleaded guilty to one charge of taking a document for pecuniary advantage and 15 charges of using that same document for continued pecuniary advantage. Ngaire Gerrard appeared in the Whanganui District Court yesterday, where she will reappear for sentencing on August 29.
Community service
A woman was sentenced to 150 hours of community work by Judge Dugald Matheson in the Whanganui District Court yesterday on cannabis-related charges. Jodi-Anne Hawira pleaded guilty to cultivating cannabis, procuring or possessing a cannabis plant and possessing utensils used to consume cannabis.
