New pool laws to make big splash

INSPECTION: Whanganui council will be enforcing new swimming pool laws in the new year.

New laws governing swimming and spa pools are ready to make a big splash in the new year.

From January 1 all pools need to be inspected and certified every three years to ensure ongoing safety compliance.

The new requirements are part of a number of changes under the Building (Pools) Amendment Bill.

Whanganui District Council Environmental Standards Team Leader Greg Hoobin said council will contact pool owners to organise an inspection of their pool's safety features as part of the changes.

Any swimming or spa pool capable of holding more than 400mm depth of water will require a building consent and includes kitset and inflatable pools and spa pools, he said.

"The council can instantly fine people carrying out work without a building consent and this also includes swimming pools," Mr Hoobin said.

While the new law ensures greater compliance with safety requirements, it also relaxes safety requirements in other areas.

"If people have a swimming or spa pool that has not been added to the council's register, or have concerns about fencing, we encourage them to contact us."

The council re-opens following the holiday period on Monday January 9.
