The new church meets at the Camera Club rooms in Handley St at 10am on Sundays and held its first service in its new venue last Sunday with 17 people attending.
"The interesting thing was that among them was a chap who'd never been to church before. That's encouraging to see," Rev Clow said.
He said Whanganui had a good number of churches of different denominations but that didn't equate to large numbers attending those churches.
"This isn't about shuffling the numbers of church-goers so much as looking to attracting back those who've moved away from church or who have never been to church."
His hope was to develop a congregation of average size.
"Realistically we're looking at 100 to 120 but we could handle up to 150."
He said at the heart of Cornerstone Community Church was preaching and worshiping Jesus Christ, discipling and encouraging people in their faith and living out authentic Christian faith that impacts all of life, not just Sunday mornings.
"The good news about Jesus Christ needs to be proclaimed with grace to people who require a word of hope in a troubled and confused generation. The Bible is key to everything we are about at Cornerstone.
"When people come along to hear the message of Christ, they will hear the words of the Bible explained to them in a simple and straightforward."
He said the new church brings something special and unique to the local church scene in Wanganui and look forward to working in co-operation with other church leaders.
"This isn't about establishing a church in opposition, it's about bringing people to the church," he said.
