A woman facing several charges has been sentenced to seven months imprisonment by Judge Garry Barkle in Whanganui District Court. Theresa Georgina Sheeran was sentenced on three shoplifting charges, theft, common assault, wilful trespassing and driving with excess breath alcohol.

Sheeran was also disqualified from driving for 15 months and ordered to pay reparation costs of $78.36, $30.49 and $34.99.

"This all stems from alcohol," said defence lawyer Jamie Waugh.

"The intention here today is to put a line under this low-level offending and get her into rehabilitation to deal with the alcohol issues."

Judge Barkle said the assault occurred in May last year.

"Both you and the victim had been consuming alcohol and following on from a comment that was made by the victim, you kicked him in the face on one occasion," Barkle said.

"Three of the theft charges follow on in July 2017 at the premises where you lived on Waiheke Island and all seem to have resulted from alcohol consumption."

The most recent offence was the only one to take place in Whanganui, where Sheeran drove off without paying for petrol with a carload of passengers.

She also had outstanding fines that totalled $3211.70, which were remitted and included in the term of imprisonment.

Sheeran will face the court again, having pleaded not guilty to a charge of wounding with intent to injure, and her next appearance will be a call-over on September 6.
