The painstaking work that goes into building a large and intricate train set is beginning to pay off for the Wanganui Model Railway and Engineering Society.
President Paul Mallett said after years of work they were getting it to a stage where it was becoming "a bit of a spectacle".
"I think most people who haven't seen it before are a bit surprised how big it is," he said.
"We've got trucks and buses that move around the town scene by themselves.
The club hosted its three-monthly open day on Saturday and about 50 people turned up to check out the progress.
"It does create membership, for sure. Yesterday we got two members out of it and it raises a bit of funds but the main thing is just opening it up to the public," Mr Mallett said.
"We are getting the railway to a stage where it's more of a publicly viewable thing."
