Although the rain was persistent, it didn't dampen the mood for a group of Marton friends when they climbed aboard their mobility scooters to attend a Christmas get-together last week.
The Marton Lions Club has 33 mobility scooters available for hire at nominal cost and Gerry Geurtjens and a couple of helpers are on call to attend to any flat tyres or mechanical troubles.
"Someone might need to get to physiotherapy appointments after they have had a knee replacement and they can't drive so a scooter is ideal," said Lions member Bradyn Moss.
Mr Moss obtained the first scooter in 2000 when he met Roy Stadler, who had both legs amputated, and the Lions purchased a second-hand scooter for him.
"It was so good for him because he had lost his independence and he would go down to the pub where they would open the door for him and lift him on to a bar stool.
