The Whanganui district could be in for a battering, with MetService issuing a strong wind warning for central New Zealand for Tuesday night.
The warning comes as a low over eastern Australia prepares to cross the Tasman rapidly and significantly deepen before it makes landfall.
The wind warning for Whanganui covers the 10 hours from 10pm on Tuesday, November 7, to 8am on Wednesday, November 8.
Northwesterlies are expected to rise to gale during Tuesday evening, becoming severe and gusting to 120km/h in exposed places overnight.
Winds are forecast to ease on Wednesday morning.
