A flag that bears the name of every Rangitikei man who fought at Gallipoli is the pivot of a play commemorating the Anzacs being performed in Marton this week.
Letters posted home by New Zealand soldiers at Gallipoli and treasured by five Rangitikei families animate the centennial tribute from the Marton Players.
Behind The Lines shows how a handful of local women met regularly to sew the commemorative flag.
Marton Players press officer Hamish White said the flag remains a local relic of the campaign.
"Oscillating between general, official history and the deeply personal impressions conveyed by the letters and statements of local combatants, the production also features period tunes and a moving rendition of The Last Post played on piano by Richard Peirce."
