A man who recently moved to Whanganui committed what a judge has described as a "nasty" assault last year.
John Rogers, 36, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with intent to injure and was sentenced by Judge Bruce Davidson in Whanganui District Court.
The judge said that Rogers' offendingoccurred on August 18, 2018.
"You grabbed the victim who had been your partner for several years around the throat, squeezing it, causing her to struggle for breath," Judge Davidson said.
"You then kicked and stomped her. The assault resulted in moderately serious injuries."
"This was a nasty assault. It involved a strangulation and a stomping. The complainant was vulnerable. It occurred while two children were in the house," the judge said.
"You have vowed to the probation officer to make a commitment to forging a better relationship with the victim, if only for the benefit of your children."
In sentencing Rogers, the judge noted he appeared motivated to attend counselling, took his guilty plea into account and his support in the community from his family.
Judge Davidson sentenced Rogers to five months' home detention.
