A man was rescued by helicopter after being injured during a descent of Mt Ruapehu.

The man was one of two people who had climbed the southern slopes intending to ski or snowboard down yesterday evening.

Alpine rescuers and the Mr Ruapehu ski patrol were flown to a summit ridge by the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter and made their way down to the injured party.

The man was taken to a lower, flatter slope where he could be safely picked up by the helicopter.

As darkness fell and bad weather approached he was flown to Rotorua Hospital.
