Lyric Singers will present their mid-year concert Homeward Bound on Saturday, June 16, featuring three groups of secondary school musicians as guest artists. These students all performed in the Regional Chamber Music Contest recently.
From Whanganui High School, Buzz Rolls, a trio of Year 10 percussion students, will perform a piece composed by their teacher, Michael Franklin-Browne. Also from High School are 2 Crochets and a Quaver, two students with a vocal and piano duet performing Song and He Moemoea, composed by another New Zealand composer, Anthony Ritchie. The Millennium Trio from Collegiate will perform David Hamilton's Promat Chorus Hodie. All three groups won prizes at Friday's regional NZCT Chamber Music Contest held at Prince Edward Auditorium, with Millennium Trio the overall winners.
The choir will sing a variety of songs on the theme of the importance of home and a sense of belonging. The songs have been chosen to further develop the blend, diction and intonation of the choir. Favourite items are Anthem from Chess, The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha, African Psalm and a gorgeous setting of Wild Mountain Thyme, featuring Lisa Boessenkool as solo flautist.
Lyric Singers took part in SingFest in Palmerston North in April this year. The photo says it all — the choir had a great time networking with other choirs and enjoyed chatting, laughing and singing together. Feedback provided at SingFest from the commentator, Joe Christensen, has given the choir plenty of ideas for future performances.
