The Wanganui Opera House has been granted almost half a million dollars of lottery money.
The $480,000 has been granted for seismic strengthening and seating refurbishment of the opera house.
The Lottery World War I Commemorations, Environment and Heritage Committee has approved $400,000 toward the cost of seismic upgrade, which is a third of the total cost of the work.
The Lottery Community Facilities Fund approved $80,000 for a separate application for funding towards refurbishing the seating at the Opera House, which will be undertaken during the seismic upgrade project.
Wanganui Mayor Annette Main said the focus of the application was "preserving our magnificent opera house for continued use by current and future generations".
