He won his first couple of matches, knocking over second seed James Gould in the semifinals, but was beaten in the final 3-1 by top seed Henry Aitken from Waimea.
The men's division two saw Paurini Taylor win the consolation plate, while in division three, Dave Campbell had to default his last match due to injury after losing his semifinal in four sets.
The men's division six provided the upset of the tournament, as Whanganui's Michael "Smudge" O'Connor, who was seeded fifth, took the title in style.
O'Connor knocked over second seed Regan Thomas in a close four-set game, which then put him into the championship rounds of the round robin.
He then beat the fourth seed Josh Brownrigg, who had earlier upset top seed Guy van Raders from Hawke's Bay.
In his final match against Raders, O'Connor got off to a bad start, losing the first two sets, one of those a close 17-15. He then pulled it back with three set wins of 15-9, 15-9 and 15-10 to claim the title.
Laurie Hill was the only Whanganui woman competing and found it tough going in women's division one.
Thor Darlington, 10, was runner-up in junior division one.
He had a couple of great wins, beating third seed Baxter McGonigal in five sets, then second seed Chelsea Hawkes from Red Star in a close four-setter, but these sandwiched a straight sets loss to Flynn Roache.
After the Whanganui Open on April 20-21, next up for some of the Whanganui players is the Central Districts Senior one-day representative fixture against Waikato on April 28.
Rod Bannister will be the coach, while Darlington, McKenzie and Matt Ratcliffe have been selected for the clash.
