Joanne and Chris Manukonga of New Plymouth wanted to give a shout out to Matthew Manu, who went above and beyond while they were visiting the city.
They wrote to the Chronicle that "we were visiting Whanganui from New Plymouth on Sunday and we climbed the tower on Durie Hill.
"To our disappointment someone had placed a road cone into the frame work at the top, as some sort of prank. We felt it took away the historic beauty and creative architecture from the tower.
"Present was proud local resident Mr Matthew Manu and he felt it did also, and so he proceeded to extricate it from the framework to the applause of those present. He took it and placed it back down on to the roadway where it belonged."
They attached a photo of "your local hero".
