A vegetation fire has broken out along State Highway 4, near Parikino, northeast of Whanganui.

A “massive” vegetation fire has broken out along State Highway 4, near Parikino, northeast of Whanganui.

In photos and videos sent to the Herald, large plumes of grey and white smoke were seen spreading across the rural countryside.

A witness told the Herald the fire was “massive”.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said they were called to a vegetation fire on State Highway 4 about 4pm.

“There are seven tankers and one helicopter in attendance and are still trying to gain access to the site.”
