Martha, Lady Taiaroa has died in Taumarunui.

Lady Taiaroa (pictured) died on Friday, aged 75.

Daughter of a leading Ngati Tuwharetoa family and with strong Tainui affiliations, Lady Taiaroa was the wife of the late Sir Archie Taiaroa, a hugely influential Maori leader.

Sir Archie, who died in 2010, had many important roles in Maoridom and the wider New Zealand community.

Among them, he led Treaty of Waitangi negotiations for the Whanganui iwi and advanced the development and growth of Whanganui River tribes.
