The skies above Springvale Park became a world populated by giant, colourful creatures during yesterday's annual kite day.
Members of the New Zealand Kite Association came from as far away as Northland and Wellington to fly their kites, which included pandas, sea creatures, penguins, teddy bears, lizards, and streams of stars.
The colourful parade of kites in the sky attracted dozens of passers-by to stop, while many smaller children played with the earthbound kites, including a herd of ladybirds.
Organiser Geoff Campbell said association members usually met on the first weekend in September to fly their kites in Wanganui on Saturday and at Ohakea on Sunday.
"But this year we were told we couldn't use our usual space at Ohakea, so we had to quickly reorganise," Mr Campbell said.
