KERBSIDE recycling is on its way back to Wanganui. Councillor Don McGregor said yesterday that despite kerbside recycling being canned in 2004, strong support in the recent referendum meant the council would renew the service.
The Wanganui District Council's Infrastructure committee would meet during the next month to discuss the possibilities for the new service, he said.
"It will happen," Cr McGregor said. "There may be compromises along the way, but it will happen."
The 2007 referendum showed 66 percent of respondents wanted kerbside recycling brought back.
Council officer for waste minimisation Stuart Hylton said the service could result in an increase in rates of about $23 per household.
The projected cost was based on collection in only the urban areas.
"The service is primarily proficient in urban areas. Of course there would be increased cost if the service was wider," he said.
Issues other than cost had to be considered in setting up the recycling service, however. Different options for the service also had to be considered.
"Like what materials would be included in the collection. Whether or not to include glass because then it becomes an OSH [Occupational Safety and Health] issue," he said.
Mr Hylton said the service could not be set up until at least the next financial year because the budget for this year was already in place.
