Jazz Club kicks off the Holiday Season with the Klezmer Rebs
The Whanganui Jazz Club presents its final concert for 2016, and at the same time kicks off the Festive Season with the swinging, singing Klezmer Rebels.
Veterans of the NZ ethnic/world music scene since 2002, the Klezmer Rebs have just launched their fourth full length CD, Always a Pleasure and will be playing songs from it at the RSA on Sunday, December 4.
Klezmer music originated in Eastern Europe, and its 'classical' repertoire dates mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. This is joyful music, celebrating the happy times and inspiring you to dance. The other side of the music is poignant, with 'slice of life' stories from the 'old country'. The Klezmer Rebs express both sides in their repertoire, adding partisan songs from Italy, French chansons, Latin cowboy love songs, Argentine tangos and 1940s swing vocal songs. Their own quirky, politically charged multi-lingual originals are some of the most popular crowd tunes.
The Rebs are a performance band - full of story songs and interaction with the audience. The songs are portrayed dramatically as well as aurally.
The line-up features Urs Signer on clarinet, Rosemary O'Hara piano and vocals, Rob Edgecombe bass, David Weinstein guitar mandolin and vocals and Liz Auchinvole violin. Together the Klezmer Rebs capture the true klezmer spirit with songs of joy, sorrow and rebellion.
Come and celebrate with us at the RSA, 170 St Hill St on Sunday, December 4. Doors open at 5.30 for meals and snacks, and the music is from 6.30 to 8.30.
Jazz is....Jim Robinson, New Orleans trombonoist, saying, "I like to see people happy...the spirit gets to me and I can make my trombone sing. When I play sweet music, I try to give my feelings to the other fellow. That's always in my mind. Everybody in the world should know this."
