Defence lawyer Jacinda Younger said Smith had a conviction for wilful damage in 2012, and said that, apart from a conviction for possession of an offensive weapon earlier this year, her client had been "out of trouble".
"He tells me there was an argument, there was a loss of control," Ms Younger said.
"He has no income, he has outstanding fines."
Smith was sentenced on May 27 to community work, but had so far done only one day.
Mr Morrison was unsure of the reparation amount for the damaged wall so the matter was stood down for five to 10 minutes to find out.
Judge David Cameron told Smith "just behave yourself" as he left the dock.
Smith then muttered about the court and used the "f" word. He was called back by Judge Cameron.
"If you swear like that in court I will hold you in contempt and send you into the cells," he warned.
When a reparation figure was decided on, Smith said he could fix the wall himself.
"I don't have any trades, it's not rocket science," he said.
Judge Cameron said it was "probably better that I get someone else to do it".
He sentenced Smith to 40 hours of community work and ordered him to pay $150 reparation.
