September was a month of extreme weather for Wanganui, including the highest September rainfall since records began 120 years ago.
The month saw the highest daily rainfall, third highest maximum temperature, second highest minimum temperature, third highest mean minimum temperature, and third strongest wind gust, according to figures released this week by Niwa's Climate Centre.
September in Wanganui was characterised by warm, windy and very wet weather.
The city recorded its highest September rainfall since records began in 1890. At just under 200mm, that represents 275 per cent of its September average of 72mm.
Only seven of September's 30 days were without rain.
On September 6, Wanganui received 39mm in a 24-hour period - its highest daily rainfall figure since records began in 1937.
However, this figure was a long way off that recorded by Milford Sound on September 5. It received 135mm in 24 hours, which was the highest for the month, although not a record-breaker for Milford Sound.
On September 29, Wanganui recorded its third highest temperature ever recorded in September, a balmy 21.2C.
The third strongest wind gust of 87km/h was recorded a week earlier.
Niwa's climate scientists have forecast average rainfall for Wanganui for the rest of the year and warmer temperatures.
It's official Last month was a record breaker
