St Anthony's School Medieval Fayre was held in Gonville on Saturday, with Whanganui people flocking to Alma Rd to take in the festivities.

Organiser Anthony Magnoli said he was thrilled by the number of people who made an appearance.

"It was a beautiful day, and I think it was record-breaking for us," Magnoli said.

"Everything just fell into place."

The numbers of stalls and games had increased from last year, Magnoli said, and all the money raised went directly back into the school itself.

"The archery was pretty popular, and so were the horse rides of course. For the little ones the bouncy castle was the big thing.

"The hay rides on the quad bike was just going non-stop as well, and it was always loaded up with kids."

Magnoli said it was the third edition of the fayre, and members of the community were slowly embracing the medieval fancy dress theme.

"We always encourage it (dressing up), to add to the ambience, and every year we seem to get a few more people dressing up and getting into it.

"There are already plenty of ideas for next year, and we'll probably expand onto the car park in front of the church as well."

Magnoli said a local medieval battle re-enactment group had taken part in the Fayre this year.

"I didn't even know they were here in town, but they contacted me and I immediately said 'come down and join us'.

"Their speciality is the Viking era, but I know there are other groups around the North Island who have your more traditional knights and things like that.

"We'll definitely have a bit more of that kind of stuff in the coming years."
